Lay flat bags are available in a variety of thicknesses (mil) with unique uses and advantages ranging from 1 mil to 6 mil. The mil refers to the gauge or thickness of the poly bag. 1 mil bag are thin and are for packaging lite items, whereas 6 mil bags are thick and strong and are used for packaging sharp heavy and or sharp objects.

Poly bag sizes are typically listed with the width followed by the length, such as 8 inches wide by 10 inches long. They are open at the top, and can be sealed by a twist tie, rubber band, bag tape or by heat sealing.
